RIPON – A transit bus that’s fueled on compressed natural gas could soon be coming to Ripon.
On Tuesday, the Ripon City Council is scheduled to give Mayor Elden ‘Red’ Nutt the OK to sign the agreement with an Stark Area Regional Transit Authority on the purchase of the CNG bus from San Francisco-based Gillig LLC.
The open session begins at 7 p.m. inside Ripon City Hall’s Council Chambers, 259 N. Wilma Ave.
SARTA has an agreement with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. in developing and operating vehicles using alternative fuel.
Natural gas is clean and environmentally friendly, in abundant domestically, and reduces the demand for foreign supplied petroleum fuels.
The cost for a CNG bus is $550,000.
Funding would come from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program or CMAQ grant.
