The East Union boys swept the 100-meter dash and pole-vault competition Saturday in the Dave Soeth Invitational, but that was not enough to win the meet, as Sierra edged the Lancers 96-84.5, while Lathrop’s Riley Gier swept the distance races.
Meet host Lathrop ran away with the girls competition 131-67 over second-place Sierra at Bennie Gatto Field.
Jackson Fay took first for the Lancers in the 100 at 11.03 seconds, followed by J.P. Abrew (11.06) and Gunnar Fay (11.16). Gabriel Lopez cleared 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault, with Antonio Escobar finishing second (10-0) and Sean Rutter third (9-6). Also of note for East Union was Mario Quezada’s gold-medal finish in the 110 hurdles at 15.68 seconds, breaking his own school record and he is just a sophomore.
Gier won three grueling gold medals in the 800 (1:57.95), 1,600 (4:49.86) and 3,200 (10:48.16).
The Sierra 4x400 relay team of Kenneth Roach, Sebastien Paterson, Mantoj Grewal and Anthony Glover won in 3:38.16 as did Anthony Glover in the 400 (51.60) and Teegan Nazzisi in the shot put (49-5). Finishing second for the Timberwolves were Grewal (110 hurdles, 16.20; 300 hurdles, 44.6), Glover (200, 23.41), Christian Gonzales (800, 2:03.21), Max Perez (1,600, 4:53.79) and Alvin Varghese (3,200, 10:54.73). The 4x100 relay team of Brayden Vargas-Daniels, Oluwademilade Akinleye, Eli Phifer, Francis Bravo was third in 44.89 along with Connor McCoy (shot put, 45-9; discus, 128-2) and Kenneth Roach (200, 52.72).
The East Union 4x100 relay team of Gunnar Fay, Jackson Fay, Darrion Brown and Abrew finished first in 42.52 along with Gabriel Lopez in the pole vault (11-6). Finishing second for the Lancers was the 4x800 relay team of Jack Huynh, Prince Chweya, Emanuel Saldana, Manuel Flores (10:12.04), Abrew (100, 11.06) and Gunnar Fay (high jump, 5-6). Gunnar Fay picked up his fourth medal of the day with a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay (3:42.18) along with Jackson Fay, Darrion Brown and Tyse Goodwin. Dante Tafoya (long jump, 5-4) and Brown (200, 23.65) also finished third.
Gier was the solo gold-medal winner for the Spartans. Avner Faaaliga was second in the shot put (47-7 ¾) and discus (129-4) and Malachi Gonzales in the long jump (18-8). Finishing third for Lathrop were Adrian Vaye (400, 52.76), Wilfredo Payopay (1,600, 5:02.69), Tristan Ramirez (3,200, 11:00.76) and Treydon Santos (300 hurdles, 44.6).
Finishing first for Manteca were the 4x800 relay team of Brayden Hegarty, Eliyas Reyes, Emanuel Saldana, Manuel Flores (9:55.04), William Brown (300 hurdles, 40.87) and Nikko Juarez (long jump, 20-10). The Buffaloes finished second in the 4x100 relay (Juarez, Quinn Martinez, Mateo Esparza, William Brown, 43.31) and 4x400 relay (Martinez, Brown, Esparza, Damien Short, 3:40.24) and Brown was third (110 hurdles, 16.51)
The Spartans girls tallied seven gold-medal finishes – Faith Allen (100 hurdles, 17.68; 300 hurdles, 52.19), 4x100 relay (Ariyana Miller, Melia Lewis, Erin Chunn, Faith Allen, 52.05), Morgan Emery (1,600 5:50.31), Jazmine Sorrell-Williams (shot put, 33-11), Erin Chunn (high jump, 5-0) and Alyvia Galano (pole vault, 10-0). Lewis as second in the 100 (13.17) and 200 (27.09) as was Aleena Basi (400, 1:06.36), Jennifer Ramos (3,200, 14:09.36) and Gianna Barragan (pole vault, 7-6).
Lathrop’s Briana Valencia won bronze medals in the 100 hurdles (19.98) and 300 hurdles (55.07) as did Moira Ramones (long jump, 15-11; triple jump, 33-2), Emery (800, 2:34.81), Lilliana Rodriguez (3,200, 14:19.33), Myli Babagay (discus, 81-6) and Gianna Barragan (high jump, 4-4).
Khamylle Bollengier was first for Sierra in the 400 (1:01.77) along with Anna Dittman (800, 2:25.19) and Alysia Sinclair (3,200, 14:01.33). Finishing second were the 4x400 relay (Alyssa Rodriguez, Naomi Ross, Jazmine Calderon Banda, Bollengier, 4:50.51), Alyssa Rodriguez (800, 2:31.77), Monserrat Saavedra (1,600, 6:03.43) and Mya Everett (high jump, 4-10). Felisa Beard was third (100, 13.22) as was Bollengier (200, 27.52) and Mia Ona (pole vault, 7-0).
Manteca’ s Raniya Nelson won the discus (117-5). The Buffaloes 4x100 relay team of Camila Torres, Kayla Louis, Kaylee Williams, Kiara Williams was second (53.17) along with Kiara Williams (100 hurdles, 18.22). Jacey Ugazina, Anaya Harper, Kayla Louis and Kaylee Williams were third in the 4x400 relay (4:43.98) along with Harper (400, 1:06.99) and Raniya Nelson (shot put, 33-11).
Marley Arrizano (100, 13.11) and Alysia Sinclair (3,200, 14:01.33) were gold-medal winners for East Union and Cheyenne Hudson (1,600, 6:07.83) finished third.
