ROUNDUP: Manteca, EU prevail in VOL softball slugfests

Manteca’s softball team survived a late surge from visiting Patterson on Thursday to prevail in the Valley Oak League contest, 14-13.

The Buffaloes (7-4 VOL, 14-8 overall) were well ahead 13-2 after four innings, but Patterson (2-10, 10-10) was able to avoid the 10-run rule with three in the top of the fifth.

Three home runs powered Manteca’s attack. Ayva Wilkins accounted for one of those bombs, finishing 2 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs. Lauren Moncada also went 2 for 3 with a homer, adding two runs and two RBIs. Bella Cooper crushed a solo homer and scored twice.

Maleiah Garza (2 for 4, double, two runs, RBI), Neriah Flores (2 for 3, run, three RBIs), Sienna Owen (1 for 2, double, two runs, RBI) and Aleisa Harris (2 for 4, two runs, two RBIs) also contributed to the 13-hit barrage.

Manteca concludes VOL play next Monday and wraps up its regular-season schedule on Wednesday against visiting Gregori.

East Union 11, Mountain House 9

The Lancers (5-7 VOL, 14-12 overall) overcame an early 7-0 deficit to win their regular-season finale at Northgate Softball Complex.

They plated 11 unanswered runs, and Mountain House (4-7, 10-10) could only muster up two in its comeback attempt in the seventh inning.

Freshman Rhyan Murillo slugged her second home run of the season for East Union, finishing 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Na’meen Harper drilled a pair of doubles and went 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Lily Pickering (double, RBI) and Isabelle Reyes (two runs, RBI) each also went 2 for 4.

Pickering was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts.

Hughson 13, Ripon Christian 0 (5)

Freshman Austynn MacWilliams belted two of three hits for Ripon Christian (1-9-1, 2-15-1) against the Trans Valley League champion Huskies (10-0, 17-3).

Raegan Colace got the other hit.

Emma Carne went the distance in the pitcher’s circle for Hughson, striking out nine against no walks in the shutout. She was also 3 for 4 offensively with a double, two runs and an RBI.

BASEBALL

Ripon 1, Hilmar 0 (10)

Winners of seven straight, Ripon (9-3 TVL, 17-9 overall) goes into the postseason riding some momentum.

Fabian Nuno knocked in the lone run of the game, plating Jack Peters. He was responsible for two of the Indians’ seven hits, while pitching seven strong innings, which includes five hits and two walks given up, along with 10 strikeouts.

Winning pitcher Frank Carter-Castro threw the final three in relief, surrendering one hit and a walk against four strikeouts.

Xavier Silveira pitched the first seven innings for Hilmar (4-8, 10-12) in the pitcher’s duel, lasting seven innings that include 12 strikeouts, three hits and three walks.

Pacheco 17, Lathrop 0 (5)

The Spartans (4-10, 7-17 overall) ended their Western Athletic Conference schedule with a seventh consecutive defeat.

They were held to just three hits, one each from Vaughn Sanchez, Jaicob Ewing and Sacir Labra.

Mario Rivera netted 12 strikeouts in his mercy-shortened complete game for visiting Pacheco (10-4, 17-6).
