It’s been more than two decades since Jolynda Lyon first came up with the concept for SONdance Ministries – a place where parents can take their children for worship-based dance productions that strays far away from some of the provocative dance lessons offered today.

And on Friday night, hundreds packed into Calvary Community Church for the organization’s newest installment –  “Remember” – that centered on keeping the proper worship in perspective regardless of how bad things might seem at the time.

“This is geared towards remembering that we still have hope no matter how bad things may seem,” Lyon said. “It’s a reminder that God is in control and paying attention to everything in our lives.”

SONdance, which represents 42 multidenominational churches here in the Central Valley, puts on both a summer and a spring performance. It utilizes more than 120 dancers during each of their performances and roughly 30 additional staff members to pull off such assign massive event.

A combination of ballet, jazz, and singers make the event what it is, and for some parents like Rick Mizer, it’s a chance to get his children involved in a faith-based performance that doesn’t incorporate the provocative dance lessons that are becoming more and more popular these days.

“I’ve been involved with SONdance with my entire family for about 15 years, and it’s really a faith-based production that we’re proud to be a part of. There are so many dancers out there that are trying to be like Britney Spears, and that’s not what we’re trying to be involved with,” Mizer said. “The Lyon’s have put together something that makes both the parents and the children feel comfortable.

“So we’ve made the choice on guiding my children, my family to believe in a higher power.”

SONdance’s “Remember” will hold a matinee show today at 2 p.m., at Calvary Community Church – located at 815 W. Lathrop Road. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. For more information, visit www.sondanceministries.org.
