Ripon is asking the South San Joaquin Irrigation District for some help in their bid to try and secure federal funds to extend a major trunk line to the Nick DeGroot Surface Water Treatment Plant.
The SSJID board when they meet Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the district office, 11011 E. Highway 120, will consider sending General Manager Jeff Shields to Washington, D.C., as part of the upcoming San Joaquin County One Voice lobbying trip.
Ripon originally opted not to join Manteca, Lathrop, Tracy and Escalon in a partnership with SSJID to build the surface water treatment plant located near the base of Woodward Reservoir some 20 miles northwest of Ripon.
Ripon originally figured they could rely on ground water to accommodate growth. Dropping water tables and increasing standards to clean well water is prompting the city to buy into the treatment plant.
It also means an expensive public works project to extend a line from Ripon to the treatment plant.
Manteca has been using the surface water to blend with well water to reduce expensive treatment costs. They are also using the water to meet peak demand in the summer.
The treatment plant – once the second phase is built – is projected to provide Manteca with enough water to support a population of 160,000 plus.
