TRUCKEE (AP) — Rescuers say one person is dead and one is alive after a single-engine plane crashed a few miles from California’s Truckee Tahoe Airport.

Placer County sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Ausnow says the survivor was being taken to the hospital Monday afternoon, and another person aboard was pronounced dead on the scene. He described the occupants as a man and a woman, but declined to say which had died and where they were headed until next of kin were notified.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer described the aircraft as a Piper PA-46 Malibu. Ausnow says it went down near Martis Peak in a rugged area about six miles southeast of the airport.

It was unknown why the plane crashed.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
