2 missing, 1 dead in Kern River after July Fourth

BAKERSFIELD  (AP) — Two Kern River swimmers remain missing Friday after multiple search-and-rescue missions by San Joaquin Valley authorities.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office responded to three separate calls for people missing in the river Thursday.

Officials were called to an area near Rabbit Island around 4:30 p.m. after bystanders pulled a woman out of the water. They gave her CPR but then declared her dead.

A search team was later called for three people needing help near Granite Point shortly before 5 p.m. One person self-rescued while another was hoisted to safety by authorities. The third is still missing.

Rangers also responded to a call about a missing 20-year-old man shortly after 5 p.m. He remains missing.

The Kern River claimed a record 16 deaths in 2017.
