SAN LORENZO (AP) — An attorney for the family of a San Francisco Bay Area man who was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies says deputies created the confrontation that led to the shooting.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that attorney John Burris and family members of 61-year-old David Goins criticized the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office at a news conference on Sunday.

Sheriff’s officials say deputies shot Goins at his home in San Lorenzo on Feb. 17 after he assaulted paramedics who were trying to put him in an ambulance and then went after the deputies with a baseball bat.

Burris said Goins left the ambulance because he wanted his family to take him to the hospital. He said deputies then unnecessarily broke down the door of the house and confronted him.
