OBAMA TO DESIGNATE CHAVEZ HOME AS NAT'L MONUMENT : KEENE (AP) — In a move aimed at shoring up support from Hispanic and progressive voters, President Barack Obama will designate the California home of labor leader Cesar Chavez as a national monument.
Obama will establish the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene during a campaign swing through California next week. The property is known as La Paz, short for Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz, or Our Lady Queen of Peace.
It served as national headquarters of the United Farm Workers, as well as Chavez's home, from the early 1970s until his death in 1993.
Obama says in a statement that Chavez "gave a voice to poor and disenfranchised workers everywhere" and that La Paz was at the center of significant civil rights events.
FALL HEAT WAVE BRINGING TRIPLE-DIGIT HIGHS: LOS ANGELES (AP) — California's in for another day of fiery fall weather.
The National Weather Service says there could be record high temperatures across the state Monday afternoon along with gusty winds in the mountains and extreme fire danger.
Downtown Los Angeles could hit 100, matching a daily record set in 2008. Inland valleys in the San Francisco Bay area could see triple-digits.
On Sunday, LA's Woodland Hills area hit 103, topping a record set in 2003. Indio had a low of 81, breaking the previous record of 79 set back in 1966.
The weather service says there's high fire danger through Tuesday in mountains because of hot, dry weather, tinder-dry brush and possible wind gusts of 20 mph or more.
The heat could start to ease Tuesday evening.
2 HURT AS ELDERLY DRIVER CRASHES INTO DINER: CARLSBAD (AP) — Authorities in San Diego County say an 82-year-old man drove his car into a diner, injuring two people inside.
Carlsbad police say the car plowed into Ruby's Diner on Sunday afternoon.
Police say they believe the driver became confused and they'll ask that his driver's license be reevaluated.
TEEN HOSPITALIZED AFTER WATER PARK FALL: SANTA CLARITA . (AP) — A teenager is hospitalized after a 60-foot fall from a Southern California water park slide.
The 19-year-old jumped the line of park guests, barged past lifeguards and leaped head-first instead of feet-first onto the Black Snake Summit water slide at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in the Valencia area.
He went over the side about half way down the 650-foot-long water slide.
Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators say the man has no broken bones and no internal injuries.
A Hurricane Harbor spokeswoman says he was not cleared to go down the slide and had not received instructions to position himself
MAN COLLAPSES, DIES DURING SAN DIEGO COUNTY HIKE: JULIAN . (AP) — Authorities say a man collapsed and died during a weekend hike in San Diego County but it's not clear if the hot weather played any role.
Authorities say the 27-year-old Coronado man had hiked with three friends near Julian on Saturday afternoon and was returning when he collapsed about halfway back on the trail.
Paramedics were flown in but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn't been released
Temperatures were in the mid-80s.
State fire Capt. Mike Mohler said it's not uncommon for hikers to get into trouble on the nearly four-mile trail when it gets hot.
However, the cause of the hiker's death remains under investigation.
