Sedan in NorCal missing teen case

MORGAN HILL  (AP) — Authorities say they're looking for a vehicle that they believe is connected to the abduction of a Northern California teenager who's been missing for nearly two months.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office on Monday released a photo of a 1990s red Volkwagen Jetta that's similar to a car linked to the disappearance of 15-year-old Sierra LaMar. Investigators believe Sierra was kidnapped March 16 while walking to a bus stop near her Morgan Hill home.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza says the red sedan being sought has a black hood.

Meanwhile, crime lab technicians continue to analyze possible evidence found during searches for Sierra.

Cardoza says they've determined a handcuff box and used condoms found within a mile-and-a-half of her home are not associated with the case.

Neighbor carries elderly woman out of burning home

ALAMO  (AP) — A Northern California man hopped a fence and rescued a 96-year-old neighbor from her burning home.

Randy Harrell saw flames engulfing the woman's Alamo home Sunday evening and he jumped the fence and ran to the back door, where he spotted the woman in the kitchen.

The front of the house was in flames so Harrell carried the woman, who uses a walker, and lifted her over the fence into the arms of his 22-year-old son, Kyle.

San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District Chief Richard Price says it took about an hour to extinguish the blaze. No one was hurt.

The woman and her adult son had cleaned out the fireplace earlier on Sunday and they put the embers in a paper bag in the trash.

UC Berkeley exec fired over improper pay raises

BERKELEY (AP) — The University of California, Berkeley has fired an administrator who was initially demoted for giving improper pay raises to a subordinate with whom she was having an affair.

UC Berkeley officials say former Assistant Vice Chancellor Diane Leite's firing is effective Tuesday.

The 47-year-old Leite admitted to campus investigators that she had a sexual relationship with 31-year-old Jonathan Caniezo. His salary rose from about $40,000 in 2005 to $120,000 in 2010.

After the affair was discovered, the university demoted Leite and reduced her salary from $188,000 to $175,000.

UC Berkeley's decision to fire her comes after faculty members complained that punishment was too lenient and demanded her termination.

Motorist seriously hurt when car hits fire truck

RIALTO  (AP) — A seriously injured motorist had to be pried out her car after slamming into a parked fire truck with emergency lights flashing.

San Bernardino County fire spokeswoman Tracey Martinez says the crash occurred as firefighters were finishing an emergency call on Interstate 10 in Rialto just after 2 a.m. Monday.

The fire truck was blocking two lanes to shield vehicles involved in an earlier crash when the Hyundai Accent crashed into the fire truck and became lodged under the emergency vehicle.

It took 15 minutes for firefighters to pry the woman out of the wreckage.

The woman was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in serious condition.
