COURT PETITION SEEKS EPA ACTION ON PESTICIDE DRIFT: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Activists have filed another petition to force federal regulators to set safety standards that protect children from pesticides that drift from farm fields into nearby communities.

Pesticide Action Network, the United Farmworkers of America and other groups filed the petition Wednesday in San Francisco federal court.

It asks a judge to force the Environmental Protection Agency to answer a petition from 2009, which demanded the agency evaluate children's exposures to pesticide drift and adopt no-spray buffer zones around homes, schools, parks and daycare centers.

Plaintiffs say in the four years since the initial petition was filed, the EPA hasn't responded or taken action.

EPA spokesman Bill Keener said the agency couldn't comment, because it hasn't seen the petition yet.

MOM CHARGED AFTER GIRL DIED IN ROLLOVER CRASH: MARTINEZ (AP) — A Northern California mother has been charged with manslaughter for causing a rollover crash in Richmond that left her 5-year-old daughter dead.

The Contra Costa District Attorney's office said Wednesday that Arkita Myers of San Pablo did not restrain her daughter in a car seat when she rolled her SUV several times on May 20 to avoid slamming into another vehicle at a stoplight.

The child was ejected and crushed by the SUV.

An 18-year-old, two 16-year-olds and Myers' 7-year-old daughter -- none of whom was wearing seat belts -- survived the crash.

Prosecutors charged Myers with vehicular manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter and four counts of child endangerment.

The Contra Costa Times says that if convicted, Myers could face punishment ranging from probation to prison time.

GUINNESS RECORD HOLDER FOR SHOES KILLED: MENIFEE . (AP) — A Southern California woman who held a Guinness World Record for collecting shoe-related items has been found dead in her pool, and her former boyfriend has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise   reports 58-year-old Darlene Flynn was found dead at her Menifee home on Monday. She had suffered blunt-force injuries.

Sheriff's deputies answering a report of an argument found her body in the backyard pool and saw a shirtless man run from the property.

Twenty-nine-year-old Justin Smith was later arrested near a highway. He remains in jail Wednesday.

Acquaintances tell the Press-Enterprise the couple had frequent arguments and had broken up.

The Guinness Book of World Records says Flynn had nearly 15,000 shoe-related items, including shoe-shaped furniture, lamps and jewelry.
