CUPERTINO (AP) — Cupertino will become the first city west of the Rockies to get AT&T’s super-fast broadband Internet service.

The San Jose Mercury News reports AT&T will announce Wednesday that it will bring its GigaPower service to Apple’s hometown.

The newspaper says GigaPower promises download speeds of up to one gigabit per second — which is fast enough to download a high-definition movie in 30 seconds. That’s 100 times faster than the connection in the average American home.

AT&T says it plans to offer GigaPower to Cupertino residents as early as December, or early next year.

The company hopes to eventually roll out the super-fast service to other Bay Area cities.

AT&T hasn’t set pricing. In Austin, the company charges $70 a month for gigabit Internet access.
