SACRAMENTO  (AP) — Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who was armed with a pitchfork in North Sacramento.
Sacramento County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Shaun Hampton says officers responded to a call Thursday reporting a man was “acting erratic and despondent.”
Hampton says they arrived to find the man was holding a knife. He later went into a garage or yard nearby, came out with a large pitchfork and moved toward a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy fired.
Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
Hampton says the man was 56 years old and white. His name won’t be released until family members are notified.
