HAYWARD (AP) — Police say the San Francisco Bay Area homeowner who shot and killed a man during a home invasion robbery knew the suspect.

The homeowner told officers who were called to his Hayward residence on Sunday evening that he shot at least two people.

Hayward police Sgt. Eric Melendez says he also said he met the man he shot dead a long time ago.

Police believe the other person who was shot is a woman who later turned up at a hospital. A second woman may also have been involved in the incident.

Police declined to discuss what may have led the alleged robbers to go to the home.

The homeowner says a similar attack occurred at his home in October.
