SALINAS . (AP) — A Northern California jury on Friday found two women guilty of child abuse and neglect for chaining their daughter to a wall and starving her.

It took a jury of six women and six men one day to reach a verdict. When the decision was read to the women Friday afternoon, Eraca Craig began crying as Cristian De Anda comforted her with a hug, the Salinas Californian reported.

De Anda is facing up to life in prison after being found guilty of torturing the girl, starving her, beating her with a belt, biting her and sticking a steak knife up the child’s nose. Craig is facing up to 11 years in prison, prosecutors said.

The women’s children, two boys, now ages 4 and 7, and a 10-year-old girl were found last year living in squalor with little food.

Investigators found indications that the girl had been chained to a wall from time to time.

The children were under legal guardianship of the defendants after their troubled biological mother abandoned them in New Mexico. They are in foster homes now.
