SAN MATEO (AP) — Experts say a suspected mountain lion spotted roaming through a residential neighborhood is a rather large domestic cat.
Residents in San Mateo were ordered to shelter in place Sunday night after someone took a photograph of what looked like a mountain lion and reported it to authorities.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports Monday that experts with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife examined a concerned resident’s photo and concluded it wasn’t a mountain lion.
The animal was spotted around 8 p.m. Sunday in a neighborhood near Junipero Serra High School and Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo.
Officers from the San Mateo Police Department set up a perimeter and tried find the animal while sending an emergency notification to residents asking them to shelter in place.
