• SISTERS CHARGED IN SAN FRANCISCO BROTHEL PROBE: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California Attorney General Kamala Harris says two sisters are in custody for allegedly operating a sex trafficking ring in San Francisco.

Harris says 37-year-old Qiao “Judy” He and her 36-year-old sister Gaineng He were arrested Monday and each charged with felony pimping and pandering. Their arrests followed a five-month investigation by local, state and federal authorities.

The women are accused of running four brothels in San Francisco’s Richmond District. Investigators allege the sisters told undercover agents that “new girls” were brought in every Sunday and that customers paid as much as $200 to have sex with young women.

The sisters are being held at the San Francisco Jail on $25,000 bail apiece. Harris says they also are being investigated for possible tax fraud and conspiracy violations.

• 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL KILLED IN OAKLAND SHOOTING: OAKLAND AP) — Oakland police are trying to determine a motive for a shooting that left a 15-year-old girl dead and two men wounded, one critically.

The shooting occurred Saturday night as the car the three victims were in neared a street.

Sgt. Randy Brandwood tells the Oakland Tribune someone opened fire on the vehicle, hitting all three occupants. The driver was able to back up before stopping against a fence.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Brandwood said the driver and the other passenger, both in their 20s, were taken to a hospital.

The driver was in stable condition. The other man was critical.

Brandwood said the driver did not cooperate with investigators when they tried to interview him.

• SMALL PLANE LANDS NEAR MADERA COUNTY HIGHWAY: MADERA (AP) — The pilot of a small plane emerged unharmed from an emergency landing along a Madera County highway during the weekend.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart tells the Fresno Bee that the incident happened late Sunday afternoon while the pilot was flying from Carlsbad, California, to Reno, Nevada.

Stuart says the pilot smelled fuel, knew there was a leak and descended onto a dirt path in an orchard.

The aircraft crashed through a fence and ended up alongside Highway 41.

Traffic was delayed for two hours as the scene was cleaned up and the plane was removed.
