STOCKTON  (AP) — A Stockton  police officer died Wednesday, two weeks after an on-duty car accident, officials said.

Stockton police Officer Scott Hewell, 33, was the passenger in a patrol car May 28 driven by another officer that hit a tree in the center median, department spokesman Officer Joseph Silva said. Hewell and the other officer were on their way to help arrest a shooting suspect.

Both officers were badly hurt, and firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove them from the wreckage, Silva said.

The other officer is recovering from his injuries, said Silva, who declined to name him.

Hewell was a graduate of San Francisco State University and joined the Stockton Police Department in 2012, Silva said.
