SACRAMENTO (AP) — A Field Poll finds little-known Republican Pete Peterson leading in the race for California secretary of state, although four in 10 voters remain undecided.

The survey released Friday shows the director of Pepperdine University’s Davenport Institute supported by 30 percent of likely voters. He is the only Republican in the race.

Democratic state Sen. Alex Padilla is second with 17 percent support. Trailing behind are Green Party candidate David Curtis, independent Dan Schnur and Democrat Derek Cressman.

The survey was complicated by the federal corruption charges against Democratic state Sen. Leland Yee, who dropped out of the race following his arrest during the middle of the polling period. Padilla picked up most of Yee’s previous support.

The two candidates receiving the most votes in the June primary advance to the November general election regardless of party affiliation.

Field interviewed 1,000 registered voters by telephone from March 18 to April 5, including 292 likely voters after Yee’s arrest. The sampling error rate for those likely voters is plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.
