Santa Clara principal

 charged with meth possession

SANTA CLARA  (AP) — The principal of a Santa Clara elementary school is facing charges of possessing methamphetamine for sale.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that 42-year-old Eric Lewis — principal of Montague Elementary School — has been charged with five felony drug counts and one misdemeanor. He was arrested last week, and appeared in court without entering a plea Monday.

Lewis is accused of offering to furnish drugs to an undercover officer who allegedly contacted him on a dating site.

Authorities say they found methamphetamine, ecstasy, the date-rape drug GHB and scales and plastic bags during a subsequent search of Lewis's San Francisco apartment.

He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave from his job.

California Department of Justice spokeswoman Michelle Gregory says there is no evidence Lewis's drug activity involved the school.

Hayward police

shoot, kill suspect

HAYWARD  (AP) — Hayward police have shot and killed a man suspected in a shooting at a bar after he allegedly drove toward officers.

Lt. Roger Keener says officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Dirty Bird Bar a little before 1 a.m. Monday. According to callers, the suspect had fled in a vehicle.

Officers located the vehicle, but Keener says as they approached it, the suspect put it in reverse and came toward them. The officers opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

Witnesses told police the man had shot a customer during a fight at the bar. The victim of that shooting was treated and released from a hospital.

Neither the suspect nor the three officers involved in the incident have been identified. Keener says the officers have been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.
