SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A landmark San Francisco restaurant that became a casualty of the federal government shutdown has gotten the green light to reopen.

The owners of the historic Cliff House said the U.S. Park Service notified them late Friday that they would no longer be subject to the shutdown-induced closure order affecting the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Cliff House is privately owned, but as a Park Service concessionaire that sits on federal land, it had been forced to close when the recreation area did. Owners Dan and Mary Hountalas defiantly reopened for a day last week before federal authorities again ordered them to keep the restaurant closed and its 170 employees idle.

Mary Hountalas says she is thrilled by the new decision. She says the restaurant was losing $10,000 every day it was closed.
