DOG BEATEN TO DEATH, DRAGGED BEHIND BICYCLE: RANCHO CUCAMONGA (AP) — Witnesses say a Southern California man severely beat his dog and dragged the leashed, unconscious animal behind his bicycle.
The dog eventually died.
San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies say 27-year-old Chris Munoz surrendered after barricading himself inside his Rancho Cucamonga home for several hours Wednesday night.
He was booked for investigation of animal cruelty.
Investigators say a witness told deputies Munoz kicked the Rottweiler and dragged the unconscious dog on a leash behind a bicycle.
Munoz loaded the dog into a stroller and went into his apartment.
Munoz refused to come out for more than two hours.
He surrendered and animal control officers took the dog for treatment, but the animal was dead in less than an hour.
SF TRANSIT AGENCY CELEBRATES 100 YEARS: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A vintage San Francisco street car has been put back into service, as the city celebrates the 100th anniversary of its transit agency.
The gray and red Municipal Railway No. 1 streetcar rolled down Market Street on Thursday with Mayor Ed Lee and Sen. Dianne Feinstein at the controls.
It was driven by then-Mayor James Rolph Jr. in 1912 to officially open Muni.
The street car was retired from regular service 39 years later, but has twice since been restored — most recently between 2009 and 2010 — and will now be back in service on the F-line.
The streetcar's run on Thursday is among numerous events planned for the Municipal Transportation Agency's centennial.
HELLS ANGELS LEADER GETS PRISON FOR LOAN FRAUD: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Northern California leader of the Hells Angels biker club has been sentenced to prison for home loan fraud.
Josh Leo Johnson was one of seven defendants indicted on charges of conspiring to defraud banks by falsifying loan applications for real estate in San Francisco and several North Bay communities in 2006 and 2007.
Johnson pleaded guilty to making false statements to get a loan for a Healdsburg home.
A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced the 36-year-old Santa Rosa man to six months in prison and six months home detention. Johnson is the vice president of the biker club's Sonoma chapter.
The judge also ordered Johnson to pay $130,000 restitution to the lender.
LAWYER WHO MARRIED ELDERLY CLIENT FACES DISBARMENT: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A lawyer is facing the loss of her law license after marrying an elderly client and then allegedly misappropriating more than $300,000 of his money after his death.
The California State Bar Court on Friday recommended that Linda Nell Lowney be disbarred. Lowney's license was temporarily suspended until the Supreme Court rules on the matter.
The state bar said that Thor Tollefsen hired her to prepare his will and organize his estate in 2002. The two became romantically involved and in January 2006 the couple married. She was 54 and he was 85 and stricken with cancer. He died the next year.
Tollefsen's family accused Lowney of keeping nearly $340,000 of his estate she controlled as his lawyer meant for them upon his death.
Lowney's office phone was disconnected and she couldn't be reached for comment.
ARMORED TRUCK LEFT DANGLING OFF LA BRIDGE: LOS ANGELES (AP) — An armored truck has been left dangling on the edge of a bridge after crashing on a freeway connector road in east Los Angeles.
The California Highway Patrol says the crash was reported about 3:40 p.m. Friday on the southbound Interstate 5 connector to westbound Interstate 10. It's not yet known if anyone was hurt.
