Robin Taberna has tacked on another honor.
The longtime Manteca-Lathrop resident received the Grand Masters Outstanding Contribution to the Martial Arts Award on June 2 at the World Head of Family Sokeship Council’s 20th anniversary celebration held in Orlando, Fla.
He was inducted by Mark Shuey, a long-time friend from Nevada and, like Taberna, has the title of Grand Master.
The awards ceremony honored influential martial arts leaders who represented a myriad of styles that hailed from Israel, Japan, Switzerland, England and U.S.
This two-day weekend event included seminars by international grand masters of the world, from those well known to elusive styles of martial arts.
Taberna was among the 120 selected worldwide for the prestigious honor. The induction event took place at the Doubletree Convention Center. There were over 2,000 in attendance.
For the past 30 years, he’s been a volunteer at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manteca / Lathrop, giving free martial lessons to thousands of youngsters (information on the classes can be obtained by calling 209-239-5437 or 209-825-2695).
Taberna, who is president of the Golden State Karate Association, is also enshrined in the Manteca Sports Heroes Hall of Distinction, GSKA, International Martial Arts Competitors Federation, and World Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame, to name a few.
In addition, he’s a Vietnam veteran and retired from the Tracy Defense Depot. Taberna worked at the latter for 33 years.
