There’s just one frozen turkey in the freezer at the Second Harvest Food Bank that has been dropped off so far to help provide the main course this Thanksgiving for 1,300 struggling families in Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop.
Cash donations to Turkeys R Us are a bit better coming in at $3,075 as of Monday, some $8,000 behind the same time last holiday season.
Turkeys R Us organizers, for the first time in a dozen years, may not be able to meet their holiday goal of making sure local households – whether they are struggling single mom, the unemployed, seniors, or others who are having financial difficulties - don’t go without on Thanksgiving.
Turkeys R Us needs $19,470 to order turkeys to make sure 1,300 families hit hard by the sluggish economy will have a traditional dinner. That is only half the battle. The same amount is needed to provide Christmas meals as well for all of those in need in Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop.
Harold Rundberg was among those dropping off a donation on Monday. He dug in deep and doubled the amount he gave last year. Rundberg said he’d hate to see his neighbors in the community go without adding “times are tough.”
Bev Housden, who has allowed the Coldwell Banker Crossroads Real Estate offices serve as collection points for Turkeys R Us since 1997, noted it was commonplace when she was growing up for her family to make room at the Thanksgiving table for less fortunate neighbors.
“I’d hate to see kids or anyone go without on Thanksgiving,” Housden said.
Turkeys R Us – working through Second Harvest Food Bank – supplies the main course for Thanksgiving and Christmas each year to the various food closets serving the three communities. To cover both holidays for the 1,300 families, the group needs to collect almost $40,000.
Small donations of $25, S10, and $5 constitute the bulk of Turkeys R Us donations
A number of people take the free turkeys they get for buying a set amount of food at supermarkets during the holidays and donate that to the effort.
Donations (make checks out to Turkeys R Us) can be dropped off at Coldwell Banker Crossroads offices at 319 Main Street near North Street in Manteca or 15810 S. Harlan Road in Lathrop or the Second Harvest Food Bank, 704 E. Industrial Park Drive in Manteca.
