In these difficult economic times, volunteerism is much appreciated among city officials.
The City of Manteca’s Seniors Helping Area Residents and Police is one such example.
“We appreciate all that you do,” Assistant City Manager Karen McLaughlin said at Thursday’s SHARP meeting held in the Council Chamber.
She was joined by council members John Harris and Debby Moorhead, and Manteca Police Chief Dave Bricker.
All told, about 50 volunteers took the oath of office administered by City Clerk Joann Tilton.
Some were recognized for years of service along with the dedicating of their time.
Coordinator Jack Snyder indicated the services provided by SHARP volunteers over the years has proven invaluable to local police.
Take those serving on the Emergency Response Team, for example.
“We had (SHARP) people at the scene helping out the uniformed officers,” Snyder said.
Members of that unit that also received recognition, including Carol Lazetera, Dick Bishop, Eva Kidwell, Lois Page, Mike Crabb, Daniel Murillo, Marty Oertwig, Damon Knight, Burdell Werner, Roger Meadows, and Bob Pfirmann.
In addition, Snyder discussed the citizen’s academy, the new graffiti-handling policy, patrolling duties (checking on homes with occupants on vacation), and recruiting.
SHARP is available to those age 50 and older.
