Carl William Wick, 86, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009 at Westgate Living Center in Ironwood, Michigan.
He was born on July 31, 1922 in Hurley, Wisconsin, the son of Albin and Edna Wick. Carl had been a resident of Ironwood for the past 14 years and previously resided in Tracy and Manteca for some 50 years.
Carl is survived by his wife of 12 years, Ida Wick of Ironwood, Mich.; daughter Christine Brink of Manteca, grandchildren; Jay Brink and Will Brink, both of Manteca and Elaine and husband, Steve Harmon of Dublin, CA.; great-grandchildren; Emily and Abigail Harmon of Dublin, CA; step-children; Donna and husband, Mike Maslanka of Bessemer, Mich., John and wife Cindy Laakonen of Green Bay, Wisc., step-grandchildren Jill Maslanka of Omaha, Neb., Kathy and husband Kevin Ramage of Green Bay Wisc., Scott and wife Laura Laakonen of Oconto, and Ron and wife Stacie Laakonen of Green Bay Wisc., brother, Donald Wick of Green Bay, Wisc., sisters Dorothy Ledin of Oregon, Wisc., and Ruth Peltonen of Minneaopolis, Minn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Ellamae, in 1994, son-in-law, Don Brink in 2006, sister, Mildred Peterson and brother, Lloyd Wick.
Carl was a 1940 graduate of Hurley High. While there, he played football for the Hurley Midgets. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army/Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in India and China. He began employment with the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1952, retiring after 30+ years of service as an engineer. Carl loved golf and shared his love of the game with his two grandsons. He spent many hours at the Manteca Park Golf Course, come rain or shine. He loved animals, as evidenced by his many family pets over the years. Carl enjoyed fishing in the Midwest and especially his yearly trips to the Klamath River, in his earlier years, with his fishing buddies. In his later years, he especially enjoyed riding the shuttle to the northwoods casinos and the friendships made on these trips. Carl was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Mich. He enjoyed spending time with his family and extended family and will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed.
