Leonard Schemper, 97, was received into the hands of God on June 2, 2011.
Leonard was born to Lambert and Alice (Roze- ma) Schemper in Prairie View, Kansas on November 12, 1913. After growing up in Kansas he moved to Long Beach California where he met and married his wife of 71 years, Ann Boertien. The family then moved to Modesto in 1943 and finally to Ripon in 1954 when he and his brother John purchased den Dulk Hardware which they renamed Schemper's Hard- ware.
Having settled in Ripon he was active in church and civic affairs. He served as elder and deacon in local Christian Reformed Churches, and was on the boards of Ripon Christian Schools, Bethany Home, Ripon Senior Center, and Ripon Cemetery Associa- tion.
He was a past president of the Ripon Chamber of Commerce and was chair- man of Inland Wholesale Hardware for 10 years. Af- ter retirement he was an ac- tive community volunteer. He also enjoyed many ac- tivities including camping and bowling and he played golf and pool into his nine- ties. He is survived by his wife Ann, daughter Judy (Harold) Groetsema, son Robert (Karen) Schemper, son Ward (Yvonne) Schem- per, and daughter Annette (Mike) Weintz, eight grand- children, and eight great grandchildren with one more arriving in August. He was preceded in death by his brothers Albert, John, and Henry, and his sisters Henrietta Van Koo- ten and Carrie Schemper. He is survived by one sis- ter, Jeanette Meninga, of Modesto.
Viewing will be held at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel on Monday, June 6, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and internment will be at Ripon Cemetery on Tues- day, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. followed with a celebration of life service at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church at 11:00 a.m.
