Merle “Duane” Spencer Sr., 78, died Friday Sept. 18, 2009, surrounded by family at Promise Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 25, 1930 in Ensign, Ks, the son of Murle F. and J. Frances Sutton Spencer.

On June 7, 1956, he married Mona B. Thornton. She survives.

Other survivors include; daughters, Deborah S. Green and husband Michael, Karen L. Burns and husband Kim both of Hutchinson, son, Merle D. Spencer Jr. and fiancée Donna Brown of Beatrice, Nebr., 10 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild, mother, Frances Wilburn of Hutchinson, sister, Beverly McIver of Pueblo, Colo., 3 nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Duane graduated from Ensign High School in 1950. He worked for the Hutchinson, Ks police reserves from 1957-1962.  He then moved to Stockton Calif. in 1964, where he worked as a machinist.  He was very active and was a Deacon of the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church in Manteca, Calif. and ordained as pastor assistant. After retiring he worked at the Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery in Lodi, Calif. In 2005, he and his family moved back to Hutchinson. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle.  He will be greatly missed.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.  Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson.  Visitation in Dodge City will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Swaim Funeral Home.
