constantine

Sauter Constantine was born Sauter Gaines on August 19, 1922 to Christos Gaines and Demetroula Petropoulos in the city of Manteca, California. Her twin sister Katherine had died while still an infant. Sauter grew up on a farm in Manteca, graduating from Manteca High School in 1942. For a short time she lived in San Francisco with her oldest sister Eugenia (Jean) and brother-in-law John. She worked at Schlage Lock Company during part of WWII. Later, in 1945, she married Paul Constantine at her mother's home in Manteca. Sauter and Paul subsequently moved to San Francisco, where Paul worked for a shoe repairman. There they had two children, Irene (1947) and John (1950). Later the family moved to Burlingame, California, where Paul established his own shoe repair shop and Sauter worked in the home.

Sauter was widowed in 1966, and in 1980 she moved to San Mateo, her children, then adults, having moved away. Sauter lived in San Mateo for the next 23 years. In 2004 she moved to Redding, California to be near her daughter Irene. In 2008, Sauter moved to Windsor Care Center in Redding because she could no longer take care of herself. The Windsor staff treated her very well and many enjoyed her friendliness and vibrancy. She lived there until her death on February 4, 2012, at the age of 89.

She is survived by her daughter Irene and son-in-law Richard, son John, grandson Robert, sister Frida, and cousins, nieces and nephews. May God bless her soul.
