Selma Wrigglesworth was born in Oakland, California to Herman and Carrie Hegwer. Within a few years she welcomed sisters and brothers, Alice, Louis, Eunice and Ed. In 1921 the family moved to the Central Valley. During her childhood Selma enjoyed taking piano lessons as well as singing duets with her sister Alice. Music would always play an important part in her life. Selma graduated from Escalon High School in 1932.
After high school Selma worked as a Mother’s helper in Stockton and also as a cannery worker in Riverbank. In 1937 she attended Merritt Business School in Oakland. She was employed at East Bay Municipal Utility District for seven years.
In 1940 Selma married ”Gus” Wrigglesworth. Their honeymoon up the Redwood Highway was the beginning of many wonderful trips all over California and the United States.
Gus and Selma began their life together in San Leandro and welcomed two daughters, Mary and Belinda . Selma was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Leandro as well as PTA. and the PEO Sisterhood, (Chapters MO in San Leandro and later RC in Stockton.)
In 1965 the family moved to Manteca and opened “Wrigglesworth A Man’s Shop”. Selma became a member of the Manteca Soroptomist Club and St. Paul’s Methodist Church .
After the death of her husband Gus in 1988, Selma volunteered at St. Dominics Hosptial as well as the Manteca Historical Society. She had many wonderful trips with friends Betty, Evelyn and Kathyrn, Manteca’s ‘Golden Girls.’ In 1990 she welcomed her grandson David.
Selma is survived by her daughters Mary Coustier and Belinda Burnett, her son- in- law Ray Coustier, her grandson David Coustier and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Selma’s life will take place on Saturday, February 2, at 2:30 pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 910 North Street, Manteca, CA.
