Kyle Wesley is heading to Bloomington, Ind. next week and will be among the nation’s top 19-under athletes.
The 2017 Sierra High graduate now competes for the Modesto Junior College and has qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships held June 15-17 at the University of Indiana. He’ll compete in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.
“Kyle has had some huge personal bests this season and looks to improve even more at the Junior Nationals,” MJC head coach Demitrius Snaer said. “Kyle’s success this season can be attributed to his hard work in the offseason and his consistency throughout the year.”
The top three placers in each event at Junior Nationals earn a spot on Team USA for the International Association of Athletics Federations World U20 Championships at Tampere, Finland in July.
Wesley’s personal bests are 10.51 seconds in the 100 and 24 feet, 6 ½ feet in the long jump. His long jump mark is the best in the state this season.
He recently participated in the California Community College Athletic Association Championships, placing fifth in the 100 (10.88) and ninth in the long jump (22-1 ½) at Bakersfield College. He qualified for the state meet in four events, including the 200 and 4x100 relay.
On May 11-12, Wesley competed in the CCCAA NorCal Championships at Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium, finishing third in the 100 (10.51), 200 (22.04) and long jump (7.03 meters) and fourth in the 4x100 (42.29).
