It was an anticlimactic end to Andy Scott’s day.
Scott reached on an error to plate Bobby Mejorado (infield single) for the clinching run that enforced the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning in host Sierra’s 16-6 victory over Weston Ranch Tuesday.
He didn’t mind, though, not after bombing a grand slam to left center during a seven-run third inning followed by a two-run homer in the fifth. Scott finished 2 for 5 with six RBIs and three runs.
Sierra improves to 4-3 overall with the Valley Oak League-opening win, while Weston Ranch falls to 2-5.
“I had a lot of RBIs, but what’s that say about the guys getting on in front of me?” Scott said. “You can’t get RBIs without guys getting on.
“We did a real good job with the bats today, and hopefully that carries on for the rest of the season.”
Leadoff hitter Jacob Angelo was 2 for 3 with two walks, three runs and a double. Jonathan Davis hammered out a double and a triple in the third inning alone, finishing 2 for 4.
Sophomore Dylan DeBrower, the winning pitcher after 2 1/3 innings in relief, drove in three runs in a 2-for-3 effort, and starting hurler Jordan Ribota helped the combined cause with two runs while going 2 for 4.
Weston Ranch’s Antonio Joseph and Ribota cruised through the first two innings in a lefty-lefty matchup from the mound, but things quickly unraveled for Joseph in the third.
Davis ignited the rally with a leadoff double. After two unsuccessful bunt attempts to go down 0-2 in the count, No. 9 batter Joey Valencia poked a base hit to left and legged out a double.
“He made up for it,” Sierra coach Jack Thomson said. “I went over and told him he still had a lot of at-bat left and has some opportunities to make it a good at-bat.”
Angelo and Kenny Leasure followed with back-to-back walks to break the scoreless tie, setting up Scott’s grand slam.
The Cougars didn’t go down without a fight.
J.R. Williams and Juan Medina each roped an RBI single in the top of the fourth, as Weston Ranch chiseled the deficit down to two, 7-5.
“We have the ability to battle back, but I don’t think we as a team expect to battle back and then shut them down at the same time,” Weston Ranch coach Dave Smith said. “When we battled back I think we were just waiting for the other shoe to fall off. We just have to play with a little more confidence and belief in our abilities.”
The game got out of hand in the fourth and fifth when Sierra scratched across eight runs aided by four errors. Weston Ranch committed six total errors to Sierra’s one.
“Anytime you give a team like Sierra eight to 10 extra outs a game, that’s three extra innings they’re playing to our seven,” Smith said. “That makes it tough to win.”
Corey Lee was 2 for 3 with two runs at the plate to lead Weston Ranch. Steven Singh finished 1 for 1 with two walks and an RBI.
The two teams will wrap up the series at Weston Ranch Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
