 Ryan Teicheira is coming home.

The 2001 Sierra High graduate has been hired to coach football at his alma mater, the school announced Monday.

Teicheira currently, teaches math at Lathrop High, where he led the football team to unprecedented milestones as head coach. He stepped down after guiding the Spartans to a second straight Western Athletic Conference championship and Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinal appearance.

The opportunity to return to Sierra, where he previously served as an assistant from 2010-17, opened up when Jeff Abrew stepped down after 18 years of involvement with the program, the last three as its head coach. Teicheira did not want to pass up the chance to teach and coach at the school where his three children will attend in coming years.

“I’m beyond excited to return to Sierra High,” Teicheira said in a statement. “My wife (Jenn) and I are both alumni, as are all our siblings, and all three of our kids plan to attend this school. Our family’s roots run deep here, and it’s always been an important place to us.”

Teicheira is the fifth head football coach in the school’s 31-year history. Jeff Harbison (90-57, 13 years) is the winningest coach in program history, and Teicheira was offensive coordinator for his 2015 team that claimed the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV and California Interscholastic Federation Division IV-A state championships. The Timberwolves went on to claim a second section crown under Chris Johnson in 2019.

"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Teicheira back home to Sierra High School,” Sierra Principal Steve Clark stated. “His leadership, experience, and commitment to developing student‑athletes make him an exceptional fit for our campus and our football program. Ryan understands the traditions of Sierra, the spirit of our students, and the importance of building a program that values character, academic success, and team unity as much as athletic performance.

“We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our athletes, our school culture, and the broader Sierra community. It is a great day to be a Timberwolf!”

The Teicheira family is a core piece to Sierra High history. Ryan and his brothers — Frank III, Steven and Daniel — all went there. Their mother, Nancy, served on the Manteca Unified School District Board of Trustees for two decades.

The school’s stadium, Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium, is named after the youngest of the four brothers, who died in a single-car accident in 2002 after two standout seasons on the varsity football team as an underclassman.

In addition, cousin Scott, was the starting center and linebacker on the 2015 state championship team.

“One of my biggest motivations as a coach is continuing to build upon my younger brother Daniel Teicheira’s legacy,” Ryan stated. “Having the chance to coach Friday nights in that stadium is truly special to me.

“I look forward to getting reacquainted with the Sierra community and am excited to meet the players, coaches, boosters, and staff who make Sierra such a special place. I’m eager to work alongside Sierra’s administration and continue the growth and success the program has experienced under Coach Abrew.”

Teicheira has 15 years of coaching experience, which includes stints at Delta Charter, East Union and Oakdale. His time at Oakdale influenced his successes at Lathrop, where introduced the Mustangs’ run-based Wing-T offense. The Spartans went 40-16 in five years under Teicheira. His defensive coordinator, Justin Muschott, recently took over as Lathrop head coach.

“My years away from Sierra gave me an incredible opportunity to grow as a coach and in the game of football,” Teicheira stated. “Learning from coaches and leaders like Trent Merzon when I was at Oakdale, my former Athletic Director Chuck Selna at Lathrop, and many others throughout my 15‑year coaching career has allowed me to take something valuable from each stop along the way.

“I’m grateful for those past experiences, especially my most recent tenure as head coach at Lathrop High, as they have shaped me into the coach I am today and helped prepare me for this privilege to lead Sierra High football.”

Vice Principal of Athletics Les Wheeler looks forward to working with Teicheira again. He was also part of the coaching staff during the Harbison Era.

“Having coached with Ryan in the past, I know his attention to detail and his high expectations for student‑athletes on the field and in the classroom,” Wheeler stated. “Ryan knows what winning should look like, but he also brings an element of fun and excitement to the table which kids and adults really connect with. I am looking forward to working with Ryan as he begins his journey at Sierra.”
