Cats torch EU with late first-half run

Sonora High was coming off back-to-back Valley Oak League losses, and that was all the motivation the Wildcats would need in a 68-20 blowout of the visiting East Union Lancers Friday.

East Union (3-3 VOL, 7-2 overall) could only helplessly watch as Sonora turned a close league matchup into a one-way demolishing late in the second quarter. Sonora (4-2, 6-3) unleashed its offensive onslaught after East Union trimmed a double-digit lead to seven with a 7-yard Steven Gigli touchdown run.

The Wildcats would score 48 of the next 55 points, handing the Lancers their worst defeat of the season.

The loss has not eliminated East Union from the Sac-Joaquin Section football playoff picture, but dropping three of their final four league games is not the way the Lancers would have hoped to be heading into the postseason.

The road to the postseason does not get any easier for East Union, as they roll out the welcome mats for the undefeated Manteca Buffaloes Friday. Manteca, 7-0 in the VOL, handed Oakdale High its first loss of the league season, 35-28 at home.

The Lancers were led by Teejay Gordon’s 108 yards passing and a touchdown, making up the bulk of East Union’s 242 total yards of offense. Gordon got East Union on the board in its opening drive, hooking up with Nelson Wood for a 19-yard scoring play.

Tyler Hardesty would close out the Lancers’ scoring with a 20-yard scoring burst late in the final period.

The Lancers are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. kickoff in their regular season-ending meeting with the Buffaloes.
