DENAIR — Bring on Orestimba.
Ripon Christian can now shift its focus toward the three-time defending Southern Athletic League champion after drubbing Denair 35-7 on Friday. It’s the second straight week that the Knights (2-0 SAL, 5-0 overall) downed a fellow unbeaten team.
Kept in check for much of the first half, senior running back Michael Kamps ended up with 186 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. He also had a 4-yard touchdown catch.
The bulk of Kamps’ yardage came on second-half touchdown runs spanning 48 and 94 yards, the latter of which capped the final score with 9:29 to go. Max Steele added 90 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts.
Cade Alger was the full-time quarterback for the first time this season. Junior Nolan Lingley, who was previously splitting reps behind center, is out with a shoulder injury. Alger completed 9 of 11 passes for 66 yards and two TDs.
His 5-yard scoring toss to Austin Ries opened scoring in the final minute of the opening quarter, and he found Kamps for a short touchdown in the second. Ripon Christian led 14-0 at halftime and wore down the Coyotes (1-1, 4-1) from there.
The Knights defense held Denair’s Wing-T attack to 129 yards rushing. The Coyotes’ lone touchdown came on a 9-yard pass from Elvis Silva (9 of 15, 108 yards) to Drew Pritchard in the third quarter, closing them in 21-7.
Defensive back Sean McGovern led the defense with 10 tackles. Wyatt Nichelson had a sack that went for a 15-yard loss, and Ian Vrieling forced a fumble and recovered it.
