Manteca, EU & Sierra earn playoff berths

The close to the Valley Oak League season played a major role in the formation of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-III Football Championships bracket, but nothing could alter the extended seasons for Manteca, East Union and Sierra high’s football programs once the brackets were revealed Saturday evening.

No. 1 seed Manteca High will open its run towards the section championship hosting the No. 16 seed Vanden High (Fairfield). No 6 seed East Union, whose stock was raised with a dramatic 10-7 win over the Buffaloes Friday, will welcome No. 11 seed Del Oro High.

Sierra High’s blistering finish to the VOL season earned the Timberwolves their third consecutive trip to the playoffs, as they will travel to Patterson for a No. 15 seed vs. No. 2 seed matchup.

First-round playoff contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs, with the higher seed playing host to the game. The Timberwolves are the only area team leaving their friendly confines, but the travel to see a 9-1 Patterson squad will be the least of Sierra’s worries.

Manteca would set themselves up for a second-round contest against the winner of the Casa Roble (No. 8 seed)-Sacramento (No. 9 seed) winner Nov. 19 at home with its tenth win of the season.

The Lancers’ task of knocking off a talented Del Oro team would leave them meeting the winner of the Pioneer-Whitney matchup, while an upset by Sierra over Patterson, would leave Sierra with a road game against the Yuba City-Lincoln (Lincoln) winner.
