Things got off to a favorable start for Ripon Christian, but its good luck would not hold.

The Knights could only watch as Mariposa High reeled off 51 unanswered points in a 51-8 Southern League defeat Friday at Ripon High.

The Knights (0-2 SL, 0-5 overall) got on the board early in the first quarter when Isaac Norman scored from 7 yards out. The Knights’ defensive unit was up for the challenge early, holding Mariposa scoreless through the first 12 minutes.

“We were actually up 8-0 in the first quarter, but when they scored it really let the air out of our balloon emotionally,” Ripon Christian head coach John Vander Schaaf said. “We just had a big letdown after that, and we were not able to recover.”

Mariposa used the talents of running back Brandon Kinalele, who rushed for 214 yards and four touchdowns and was the difference for Mariposa (2-0, 3-2). His finishing touches came on the opening kickoff to the second half, in which he raced 85 yards for the touchdown, eliminating Ripon Christian’s comeback hopes.

Ripon Christian will be on the hunt for its first SL win Friday when they travel to Denair to take on the Coyotes. Game time is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

“We’re just going to have to come in Monday at look at our game film and see the things we did right and the things we did wrong,” Vander Schaaf said. “We’re going to challenge each player and try and take it one snap at a time.

“We’re just going to have to learn to execute.”
