OAKDALE — It was a tough go for East Union High Friday against the Valley Oak League powerhouse Mustangs.

Oakdale (2-0, 6-1), celebrating homecoming, scored four touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 62-26 win. It’s the Mustangs’ 30th straight victory over the Lancers (0-2. 3-5).

"They got us down from the start," East Union coach Mike Kuhnlenz said.

The Lancers were looking to bounce back from last week’s loss to defending champion Central Catholic. They'll play rival Manteca High next week.

The Mustangs wasted little time getting untracked. Gabe McDonald broke free for a 40-yard pickup on the second play of the game. That set up Wes Burford's 1-yard scoring plunge.

He scored on a 55-yard run on Oakdale's next possession.

The Mustangs also capitalized on Selso Rodriguez's interception. Burford had yet another TD followed by quarterback Tommy Chance's 9-yard score as the quarter expired.

Oakdale led 28-0 at that point.

East Union finally got untracked in second quarter with sophomore quarterback Kirk Simoni finding his rhythm. He found Blake Mount on a 27-yard TD to put his team in the scoring column.

In the second half, Simoni twice connected with Jackson Fay on TD passes of 20- and 58- yards, with the first one taking place on a fourth-down play. He also hooked up with Cesar Salinas for a 58-yard TD.

Simoni completed 18 of his 28 passes for 262 yards.

Burford and McDonald led Oakdale's ground game by combining for 277 yards. Burford racked up 134 yards on 11 carries with three TDs. McDonald had a game-high 143 yards on 10 pops.
