The Sierra High sophomore football team provided its varsity teammates with a perfect intro to set up their thrilling victory over East Union, posting a dominating 55-6 thrashing of the Lancers sophomore team Friday at Sierra.
Sierra found no resistance from the Lancers, going into the halftime with the game securely in its grasp. Offensively, the Timberwolves got solid showings from Guillermo Nunez, D’Ari Abercrombie, Randy Dao and Tyler Ray Hewitt. Teammate Kenneth Matella also made significant contributions in the Valley Oak League win.
The Timberwolves’ defensive unit was anchored by the play from Greyson Yarnell, Devin Manaios, Jason Manuta and Jesus Perez.
The Timberwolves will have a big challenge on their hands Friday when they meet up with the Manteca Buffaloes.
Eddie Smith continued to excel for Manteca, leading the Buffaloes with 177 yards on 20 carries, and scoring three TDs. Smith scored on runs of four, 64 and five yards to pace a stagnant Buffaloe offense.
“This week was full of distractions and lack of focus with homecoming,” Manteca head coach Adam Liel said. “We only played well in the first quarter. We need to put four full quarters together if we want to compete for a VOL championship.”
Ryan Fox scored Manteca’s other touchdown, hooking up with Angel Gomez for a 61-yard touchdown. Fox competed 5-of-6 passes for 91 yards.
The Buffaloes will be back on the home field Friday when they host the Sierra Timberwolves.
“We were outnumbered 40 to 14 but that didn’t stop us from playing our best game of the year,” Ripon Christian head coach Michael Dotinga said. “We really focused on playing to the whistle in practice this week and it really showed.”
Danny Vos landed in pay dirt three times; scoring two on the ground and hauling in an Andrew Brown 25-yard touchdown pass as well. Casey Kamper scored a touchdown on the ground (11 rushes, 54 yards), while both Brandon Dotinga and Brown intercepted passes.
Jacob Ruther led a defensive unit that stifled Mariposa, turning in a game-high nine tackles.
The Knights will try to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to Denair to take on the Coyotes.
