The Knights sophomore repeated as co-medalist at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Tournament on May 4, setting a personal record at Micke Grove Golf Links.
This time, he got to celebrate with his teammates.
Schenk’s 4-under-par 68 led Ripon Christian to its eighth all-time section championship, outpointing rival and defending titlist Ripon, 383-394.
“That was my first ever section win, and I know for some of our guys, it was their first section experience, so it was fun,” Schenk said.
Starting on 15, Schenk made the turn at 1-over and caught fire on the front nine, shooting 5-under. He sank five birdies in that stretch and added a sixth on the par-5 11th hole.
“It was just kind of like I was not even thinking out there, letting it come to you and not forcing it,” Schenk said. “Let the birdies come to me. I was making some putts, and it was rolling good.
“My iron shots and wedge shots were really good. I was sticking it close for good opportunities to make some putts.”
For the second straight year, Schenk shared low-score honors with a Ripon player. Cru Sullivan, also a sophomore, also carded a 68 after completing a dominant regular season that culminated with him earning the Trans Valley League’s Most Outstanding Player award.
“We’ve golfed together since we were kids,” Schenk said. “He’s a really good player, and it’s good competition.
“I was super stoked — it was my best round I’ve had in a tournament. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum going into Masters.”
Schenk and the Knights will next compete in the SJS Masters Tournament next Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
