Despite holding an 8-point lead heading into the fourth quarter the Ripon Indians simply couldn’t hold off a late charge by the Bret Harte Bullfrogs in the championship round of the 2010 Ripon Winter Classic.
After holding a lead for almost the entire game, the combination of turnovers and lackluster shooting down the stretch handed the Bullfrogs – who started to heat up right as Ripon was getting cold – a 59-55 victory Saturday night.
“They went on a big run late in the game and hit all of their free-throws in the fourth quarter, and that really hurt our chances,” said Wright. “They hit a three to put them ahead, and from that point forward were playing from behind. We had a lead with two minutes to go, and then we started turning the ball over and missing free-throws – the kinds of things you can’t do if you want to win a basketball game.
Jake McCreath led the Indians in scoring with 23 while Cole Herrin finished the game with 10 points.
The loss drops Ripon to 3-4 this season.
Ripon will see action again on Tuesday when they host the East Union Lancers.
And by scoring a combined 36 points between the two of them, that’s exactly what the Falcons did in a 63-39 victory over the host Knights Friday night during the championship round of the tournament.
“They just had guys that we couldn’t stop out there tonight,” Ripon Christian head coach Ron Vander Molen said. “They’re a tough team and we really got beat inside by their post players tonight. They outrebounded us, and all-around were too much for us to handle.”
Dan Vos led the Knights in scoring with 10 points, while older brother Logan finished the game with 8 points – also earning All-Tourney honors for his performance.
The loss drops Ripon Christian to 5-4 on the season. The Knights will see action on Dec. 28 in the opening round of the Oakdale Tournament when they take on the Riverbank Bruins.
