Buffaloes win without two top scorers

Airenne Curry’s goal in the 8th minute was all Manteca High’s girls soccer team needed in a 2-0 road win at Weston Ranch Monday, which evens the Buffaloes’ Valley Oak League record to 1-1.

Jessica Reeder assisted Curry’s goal, and Manteca (7-3-1 overall) got an insurance goal from Esmeralda Cuenca off a pass from Rocio Lopez 11 minutes into the second half.

Weston Ranch (0-1-1, 2-5-2) did well to stay within striking distance despite having to ward off 24 shot attempts from Manteca. The Cougars also had chances on the other end, firing off 11 shots. Manteca goalkeeper Jimi Guibor racked up eight saves.

Manteca rebounded from a stunning 2-1 come-from-behind loss to first-year varsity Kimball but is still working out the kinks. Sophomore standout Sialei Manuleleua has missed both of the Buffaloes’ VOL matches, and 2010 leading scorer Sammie Morris was also out on Monday.

“We were tinkering with different lineups and formations, just trying some different things because we are still short a few key players,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said. “It was the same kind of deal as last week (against Kimball); we came out as the aggressors in the first 10-15 minutes and put pressure on their defense, then our intensity went down a little bit after that.

“I don’t think we’ve found it quite yet. We haven’t put all the pieces together, and the injuries aren’t helping.”

Manteca has only today to figure things out for its big test against visiting rival Sierra Wednesday. Sierra, the reigning VOL champion, is coming off a 3-2 loss to Oakdale in its conference opener.
