Cheung torches Central Valley for 31 points

Wayne Cheung single-handedly outscored Central Valley in East Union High’s 58-30 homecoming victory Friday in sophomore boys basketball action.

Cheung went off for 20 of his game-high 31 points in the third quarter, when the Valley Oak League-leading Squires (11-2, 16-4 overall) mounted a 29-9 flurry that put the game out of reach. Cheung did not play the entire fourth quarter, making his hot-shooting night that much more impressive.

Brandon Cline chipped in with eight points for East Union, which can clinch a share of the title with a win over Lathrop next Wednesday.

Sierra 42, Manteca 30
Visiting Sierra (11-3) overcame a sluggish first half that resulted in a 15-all tie by halftime. The Timberwolves outscored Manteca 14-8 in the third to pull away for good.

Tim Thornton and Bret Wilson each had nine points for Sierra. B.J. O’Dell scored nine of his 11 points to lead Manteca, and Sal Alvarez contributed nine.

Weston Ranch 74, Lathrop 59
LATHROP — Dylan Alexander led four Cougars with double-digit scoring, firing 24 points.

Daniel Nelson finished with 14 points, Davieon Laverett chipped in 12 and Preston Watkins 10.

Sierra 43, Manteca 23
The Timberwolves (13-1, 20-1) captured the outright VOL title with Friday’s crosstown victory.

Guillermo Nunez paced Sierra with 10 points, Frankie Chavez had nine and Joey Cantu pulled down seven rebounds.

Weston Ranch 44, Lathrop 37
LATHROP — Lucky Tango and Sean Visperas spearheaded the Cougars to victory with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Alex Eason finished with eight.
