Clutch shooting lifts Sierra to victory

Sierra High’s sophomore basketball team used clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to out-duel Oakdale High 70-62 Wednesday in Valley Oak League action.

Tim Thornton led Sierra (10-3 VOL) with 17 points, while teammate Joseph Berry chipped in with 15. Aneal Sahota finished in double-figures with 13, while Bret Wilson and Johnny Waggy both added eight.

“We outscored them 24-9 in the fourth to get the win.” Sierra head coach Justin Muschott said. “It was a physical back and forth game and I’m proud of the way we were able to grind it out in the end.

“We kept our composure and Oakdale did not (two Oakdale players were called for technical’s).”

East Union 60, Weston Ranch 42
WESTON RANCH – The Lancers went on a blistering 25-5 third quarter run, spelling the end for the Weston Ranch Cougars in Wednesday’s VOL matchup.

Wayne Cheung led all scorers with 20, while temamte Brandon Cline added a dozen.

Dillon Alexander remained hot in a losing effort, scoring 18, while Daiveon Leverett added eight.

Ceres 53, Lathrop 48
LATHROP — The Spartans ran out of time in its five-point VOL loss to the Ceres Buffaloes Wednesday.
Ricky Chaves led Lathrop with 12 points, while teammate Darius Miller finished with 11.

Freshman
Weston Ranch 50, East Union 44
WESTON RANCH — Both teams were knotted at 22-22 coming out of the intermission, but it was the Cougars who pulled away for the league win.
Zerrion Payton led the Cougars’ effort with 19, while teammates Lucky Tango and Leonard Locket finished with 11 and nine, respectively.
Justin Nieto led the Lancers with 19.

Oakdale 43, Sierra 39
The Oakdale Mustangs were able to do something no basketball team has been able to do this season – beat the Timberwolves – in their four-point VOL upset.

Emmanuel Elijah led the Timberwolves’ effort with 11 points.
