Cowboys rookies blank Raiders for 4th shutout

Three of the Manteca Cowboys teams remain undefeated at 5-0, while the varsity team bounced back from its first loss with a win over the Modesto Raiders at East Union this past Saturday.

All four teams used balanced attacks and stifling defense to pull off the sweep. The rookies recorded their fourth shutout in five games.

The Cowboys continue DYSA Nor-Cal League play on the road against the Jr. Warriors of Galt this upcoming weekend.

Varsity

The rain slowed the Cowboys offense early, but it eventually snapped out of the funk and raced toa 31-16 victory.

Mason James ran for 81 yards and a touchdown while nailing all three of his point-after kicks. Quarterback Joseph Espinosa scrambled 42 yards for a touchdown and hooked up with LaFonzo Mackson for a 32-yard score off the pass. Espinosa ended up with 103 yards rushing. James Gorman added 57 yards and a touchdown.

Vincent Ferro (fumble recovery), Nicholos Stanley (fumble recovery) and Miguel Valenzuela each had seven tackles to lead the defense. Tyler Slaughter recovered three fumbles, and Brayden Hardcastle contributed a sack.

Junior varsity

Four different Cowboys scored in a 31-0 rout of the Raiders.

Leading the charge was Jordan Doyle, who piled up 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns — including a 68-yard jaunt. He also came up with a fourth-quarter interception to punctuate the victory.

Anthony Martinez scored on a 36-yard run and finished with 75 rushing yards. On defense he finished with three tackles and a fumble recovery. Matthew Pilkay was another two-way standout, finishing with 50 yards and a TD to go with three tackles, a sack and fumble recovery.

Signal caller Manny Rodriguez passed for 65 yards and a touchdown to Drew Mount.

Tommy Perez keyed the defense in his first start with five tackles. Anthony Anaya also debuted defensively and turned in five unassisted tackles and a fumble recovery.

Rookies

Quarterback Eric Morales spearheaded the Cowboys’ 40-0 drubbing with 78 yards and a touchdown rushing, and 35 yards and two scores on 6-of-8 passing.

Jaden Taforan added 66 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Kimoni Stanley rushed seven times for 48 yards and a TD. Tight end Frank Clark was on the receiving of Morales’ touchdown strike. Daniel Morales chipped in a 16-yard TD, and Vincent Gomez capped the scoring with a conversion run.

Frank Clark (8 tackles), Brian Howe (6 tackles, sack, fumble recovery) and Nicco Cedolini (6 tackles, interception) anchored the defense.

Starts

Alex Scoz amassed 131 yards and four touchdowns, and Isaac Scoz added 92 yards rushing as Manteca pounded the Raiders, 38-6.

B.J. Davis (49 yards) and Noel Ruezga each added a touchdown. Alex Cervantes and Matt Wilcox paced a well-rounded defensive effort with three tackles apiece.
