East Union’s boys soccer team notched its first two wins of the season during group play of the Arturo Marquez Memorial Tournament in Stockton Friday.

The Lancers opened with tourney host Lincoln and claimed a 2-0 victory behind a dominant second-half effort. They later locked up their spot in today’s semifinal with a 2-1 win over River City.

The tournament starts out with three groups of three teams apiece, with the winner of each advancing to the semifinals. A wild-card berth goes to the team with the highest amount of points accumulated through two games.

“We’re looking pretty strong right now,” said EU coach Victor Polanco. “The kids are ready to play this season. Our goal is to try to repeat what we did last year, and I can see the kids are hungry to go far.”

East Union (2-1-1) scored both goals against Lincoln in the second half. Alfredo Solorzano got the team on board with the assist coming from Jairo Baires. Alex Sanchez, who was named MVP of the match, doubled the lead, working off a pass from Jose Luis Marmolejo.

Solorzano struck again in the River City game, while Baires scored the other. Ruben Aguilar and Derek Souza were each credited with an assist. Goalkeeper Lucas Flores was named MVP and finished with 11 saves over the two games.

East Union plays again at 8:30 this morning and moves onto the championship round, which kicks off at 6 p.m., with a victory.

Manteca 3, Tokay 0

The Buffaloes wrapped up their nonleague schedule with a perfect 9-0 mark at Woodward Park.

Manuel Nuno, Ramon Rodriguez and Cesar Reyes each scored for Manteca.

“We’re excited about 9-0, but at the same time 9-0 doesn’t really mean anything going into league,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said.
