A nip-and-tuck battle for four quarters on Saturday turned into an overtime rout in the championship round of the 30th annual Golden Valley Lady Cougar Classic in Merced.
East Union held Gregori to a single point in the extra period, earning its fourth straight title in the tournament with the 56-44 victory.
All-tournament selection Ava Barrera scored five of the Lancers 13 points in overtime. East Union (5-1) made five of eight free throws to create separation.
Barrera finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Tournament MVP Shebra Rezaye added 11 points, six boards and four assists. Jerney Luckett also had 11 points while hauling in 10 rebounds. Zyon Dupree Beasley pitched in seven points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore Gia Brown was the lone double-digit scorer for Gregori (4-3) with 10 points.
Ripon 51, Roosevelt 28
It was all Indians (3-3) in the seventh-place game at Golden Valley. Ripon led 25-18 at halftime and limited the Rough Riders (4-3) from Fresno to single digits in each of the last two periods.
Savannah Richardson paced Ripon with 13 points and four steals. Scarlett Ponce pitched in 10 points and four assists. Ixtel Reynosa racked up nine points and eight boards.
Donna ‘Rae Price sparked Roosevelt early, scoring eight points in the first quarter before ending with a team-high 15.
Valerie Lugo Tournament
Lathrop 46, Orestimba 35
Lathrop (6-0) was not at its best Saturday, but it was good enough to overcome early foul trouble to win the tournament title at Los Banos.
The Spartans led 14-4 after the first quarter and held off a second-half charge from Orestimba (3-5) to win comfortably in the end.
Audrina Fisher picked up the slack while standout freshman Breanna Wiseman (nine points, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks) and fourth-year senior Shakara Porter (six points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals) sat with early foul trouble.
Fisher led the team with 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals. Abby Renteria (seven points, four rebounds two steals) and Jayla Seabron (six points, two rebounds, two steals) also keyed the victory.
Lathrop 30, Patterson 23
The Spartans clamped down defensively and led 13-7 at halftime. They caused 18 turnovers, picking up 16 steals while forcing four shot-clock violations.
And Lathrop did it without their two best perimeter Aisha Wiseman and Jaleiyah Ray, who both missed the tournament with injuries.
Fisher and Seabron each scored nine points to lead the attack. Renteria chimed in with seven points, four steals and three rebounds.
Non-league
Manteca 50, Enochs 48
The Buffaloes (2-5) have challenged themselves with a tough non-league schedule, but they came up with a big win on Saturday against previously-undefeated Enochs (5-1) in Modesto.
Lana Bondoc hit the game-winner with a jumper from the free-throw line with about 10 seconds remaining. She ended with eight points.
Freshman Savannah Ramirez led Manteca with 14 points and five steals. Naimi Calderon collected 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior varsity
Lathrop 47, Ripon 15
The program renamed its 10th annual lower-level tournament in memory of former assistant coach Wayne Thallander, who passed away unexpectedly last year.
The 6-0 JV team dominated its three games, including its 32-point win in the final Saturday. The Spartans also downed Enochs 47-33 to open the tourney, and crushed McNair in the semifinal, 39-18.
Zoha Ali totaled 37 points, Zakia Booker added 27 and Sariah Hilton had 22.
