Kamps, RC wear down Waterford for SL win

WATERFORD — Michael Kamps ground out 146 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead visiting Ripon Christian to a 28-7 win over Waterford in Southern League play on Friday night.
Kamps tied the game at 7-7 with an 8-yard run late in the first quarter and gave the Knights (1-1 SL, 3-2 overall) the lead for good early in the third quarter on a 5-yard scoring run set up by Sean McGovern’s 78-yard punt return.
McGovern pulled in a 22-yard scoring pass from Mark Ozenbaugh later in the third quarter and Kamps capped the night’s scoring with a 3-yard plunge in the fourth period.
Max Steele had 60 yards rushing for Ripon Christian and McGovern had 86 yards on two kickoff returns. All told, the Knights compiled 325 yards, with 119 coming through the air. Ozenbaugh completed 12 of 19 passes.
Waterford (1-1, 2-3) was held to just 28 yards rushing on 29 attempts, and quarterback Michael Vivo finished 10-of-24 passing for 159 yards. Vivo hit Jacob Stout for a 36-yard touchdown for the game’s first points with 4:18 left in the opening quarter.
Ripon Christian’s defense tightened up from there, intercepting four passes with Dillon Zuidervaart accounting for two of the picks. Defensive lineman Willem Hoekstra contributed two sacks.

Lathrop’s wins came from No. 4 singles player Darlene Hoang and No. 5 Beatrice Vilches. The Spartans dropped to 3-5 in the Valley Oak League.
