East Union’s Nick McGill takes his time before making his move during his victory over Edison in the 152 pound match Wednesday at East Union.
For it to be the opening stages of the wrestling season, the East Union Lancers came out with the intensity of a squad with postseason aspirations, taking care of Edison High with three pins in a 54-30 dual match win Wednesday at the Dalben Center.

East Union opened the match with the right wrestler, getting things underway with a first round Sarah Phillips pin over Edison’s Alexandra Orona. Phillips had little difficulty putting away Orona, turning her one shot into a reversal and following pin in the 103 pound weight class.

Bobby Dominguez pushed East Union up 12-0 with a second round pin in the 112 pound match. East Union would drop the 119 pound match, get a forfeit in the 125 pound match and then drop both the 130 and 135 pound contests.

A pair of forfeits would pull the Lancers back up 30-18 before a crowd lifting Nick McGill pin lifted the Lancers for good. McGill was seemingly overmatched in the 152 pound weight class, but returned from a 9-0 deficit to post a second round pin moments after a Houdini-like reversal.

“I was thinking that I was going to lose that match at first because he was so strong,” McGill said. “Finally I saw an opening and I took it and it ended up working out pretty well for me.

“It was one of the best feelings ever.”

East Union put together a solid match, posting three victories by pin and gaining 36 points off forfeits. Edison was able to get its points on five pins, but the forfeits gave East Union and advantage they would ride to victory.

“We are a real young team and we have a lot to learn, but it’s still early in the season,” East Union head coach A.J. Reindel said. “They all have something that I can’t teach; they all have a lot of heart and that desire to win.
“The moves will come, but I was definitely pleased with our performance.”

The Lancers will be back on the mat Friday when they travel to Stockton to compete in the Bear Creek Wrestling Tournament.
