Lancers split pair to open VOL season

East Union split a pair of duals to open up Valley Oak League action Wednesday night, collecting an impressive win over Central Valley, 51-28, before taking its lumps against the perennial powerhouse Oakdale, 69-12.

Against Central Valley, EU racked up pins from Marco Castaneda (119 pounds, 59 seconds), Jason Cortez (125, 0:58), Stevyn Teeple (130, 3:16), Parsa Davari (135, 1:08), Matt Neves (140, 1:28), Hector Fajardo (215, 4:53) and Albert Aguilar (HVY, 4:35).

Marcus Aleman added an 8-6 decision at 145 pounds.

Against Oakdale, only Cortez (fall, 2:35) and Neves (fall, 1:00) managed wins.

EU (1-1 VOL) heads to the Big Valley Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Stockton Arena.

The T’Wolves kicked off the VOL campaign a trip to the foothills and came away with a pair of nailbiting losses.

Against Ceres, Austin Soto (119, 3:10) and Alex Nuanez (171, 3:20) snagged pins, while Aiden Foster (145) picked up a 17-3 decision and Greg Cardenas (215) won 3-1.

“We had a couple of losses that we expected to go the other way,” Sierra head coach Frank Sabala said. “But overall, we wrestled pretty well. We have a lot to improve upon.”

Against the Wildcats, Soto (fall, 1:06), Robert Howard (125, fall, 1:33), David Ruiz (135, fall, 1:32) and Oscar Castro (189, 6-4 dec.) all came out victorious.

Sierra (0-2 VOL) heads to Escalon’s Lloyd Engel Tournament Friday and Saturday.
